Light Speed React Trisuit · Development Story

Two Wind
Tunnels.
5 Prototypes.
23 Watts SAVED.

March 2023. A blank sheet and a single question: how much faster can we make the world's best trisuit? Two years, two wind tunnel facilities, five prototypes, and athletes like Steve McKenna pushing every iteration - this is the answer. 23 watts saved over other premium brands. At this price point, nothing comes close.

R&D Commences

Fabric sourcing and selection begins across upper and lower body. The brief: find fabrics that simultaneously improve aerodynamics, moisture management, and muscle support - without compromise between the three.

Elite Athlete Testing

Initial prototypes go to elite long-course athletes. Panelling, leg length, arm length, and the underarm gusset all refined through real-world fit and performance feedback across training and racing.

What does 23 watts mean on race day? At Ironman bike pace, a 23-watt aerodynamic advantage over comparable premium brands translates to a potential 11 minutes or more over 180km - before you've changed your training, nutrition, or any other equipment. That's not a marginal gain. That's a race-defining difference, built into the suit.
* Independent wind tunnel data published by a comparable premium triathlon brand shows their flagship aero tri suit producing 350W at 50km/h at 5° yaw. The Light Speed React measured 327.7W under the same conditions,  a 23-watt difference. Note: tests were conducted at separate facilities and on different test subjects. Absolute watt comparisons should be interpreted as directional rather than definitive. Both tests used identical speed (50km/h) and yaw angle (5°) parameters.

Section 03 - The Science

Three Problems.
Three Solutions.

Aerodynamics on the bike. Muscle fatigue on the run. Core temperature throughout. The Light Speed React was engineered to address all three.

01 — Aerodynamics
SBR Channel
Aero Fabric
23W
SAVED Over comparable
premium brands at 50km/h*
225gsm SBR CHANNEL fabric is placed through the sides and centre back nutrition pocket to deliberately roughen airflow - reducing drag the same way dimples on a golf ball reduce resistance. Flat overlock seam construction eliminates any raised fabric that catches air. Every panel placement has aerodynamic intent.
02 — Cooling
HeiQ Smart Temp
Technology
2.5°C
Cooler fabric surface temperature
HeiQ Smart Temp senses a rise in body temperature and actively increases evaporation through the fabric, delivering up to 2.5°C cooler fabric surface temperature. Research shows every 1°C rise in air temperature slows marathon pace by an average of 1 minute 47 seconds. Add the back neck ice pocket and you have active and passive cooling working simultaneously.
03 — Compression
PWX Pioneering
Compression
Compression power vs standard sportswear fabrics
PWX (Power Weight X-fit) is 2XU's proprietary compression fabric - engineered to deliver more than twice the compression power of standard sportswear fabrics at a fraction of the weight. On the lower body, PWX reduces muscle oscillation and limits fatigue accumulation through the bike leg, helping protect your run performance when it matters most. More compression power, less weight - that's the PWX difference.
