Run Into 2022

It's safe to say that at some point over the last two years we have all experienced the physical and mental challenges that have come as a consequence of restrictions, lockdowns and uncertainty; from our physical health being affected by closures of fitness centres and sports venues, alongside mental challenges of feeling isolated from friends, family and colleagues.

But here you are, you've been so resilient and pushed through some of the hardest times to make it to 2022. So, whether you're ready to smash a PB, compete in a new event, or pick up a new sport entirely, we're here to help you reach your goals. You'll be reaping benefits in no time.

Here are our top tips on how to set your goals for the year (and stick to them!)

1. Start small

If your goal is to run your first marathon in 2022, give yourself time to prepare. Training plans range from 12 to 20 weeks, so there's no need to rush into distances you aren't ready for. Try running 3-5 times a week and gradually increase your mileage each month. Focus on relaxed, low-intensity runs where you can maintain conversation throughout, and incorporate long distances every 7-10 days along with short speed runs to build up your aerobic capacity. It's a marathon, not a sprint (literally).

2. Buddy up

We all have days where we would rather stay tucked up at home - even more so during the winter. Making plans to run, go to a class, or workout with a friend will help to keep you both motivated and you'll have someone by your side to encourage you on days when you just aren't feeling it. Make a monthly plan of the activities you want to do and set dates for these to help get you into a routine.

3. Patience is key

When you set yourself a long-term goal, it's easy to feel deflated when you don't see immediate results. Take your time, trust the process and be kind to yourself, but most importantly don't give up. Break your goal up into smaller milestones across the year to make the challenge feel less daunting and celebrate the small wins.

4. Do it because you want to

It's all too easy to jump on the bandwagon of New Years Resolutions. If you want to set yourself a goal for the New Year, do it because you're passionate about it, rather than because everyone else is doing it. It doesn't matter how big or small the goal you choose is.

5. Make it fun

Even if you have mapped out a route to achieving your goals, sometimes it's important to change things up and challenge yourself in new, innovative ways. Try a new fitness class, shake up your gym workout or switch up your usual running route.
